Aureliano has the face of someone who knows something you don't yet: that you were going to dare. He's the elf of the little nudge, the specialist in that exact second when someone is about to back out — the message written but unsent, the hand halfway to the door, the courage going into reverse. That's when he presses his talisman lightly. The amethyst finds the courage that was already there, because it always is, hidden under the fear, and the mushroom amplifies it the half-second needed. You feel a strange little warmth, you hit send, you knock on the door, you say what you had to say. Afterward you wonder where that came from. It came from you; he just turned up the volume. That's why he wears that half-smile of a cheeky redhead: he's seen more brave souls born than anyone would guess, all of them sure it was coincidence.
