Herbs
Smoke cleansings, waters, infusions. The green that accompanies your bond with your Guardian.

INTRO
About the herbs
+
✦ Herbs are the common language between your home and the forest. Before spoken language, before books, before maps — there were herbs. Grandmothers hung them over doorways, burned them in clay braziers, tucked them under the pillows of restless children. They knew things science is only beginning to confirm. Your Guardian understands that language natively. When you burn palo santo near him, it is not decorative ritual: it is conversation.
◈ Herbs work differently from crystals. Crystals are stone — they are slow, they are dense, they are mineral memory. Herbs are plant — they are quick, they are aromatic, they are living memory. One pass of cleansing smoke clears in minutes what a crystal would take days to do. But also: an herb burned today is gone tomorrow. You have to repeat. You have to maintain the bond. Your home needs herbs the way your body needs food — not all at once, but with rhythm.
☾ In this portal you will find the herbs that befriend each lineage, the most-used preparations (smoke cleansing, infusions, waters, amulets), the essential rituals, and a seasonal calendar so you know which herb to ask of the moon at each time of year. Disclaimer: this is symbolic art and Rioplatense-Andean tradition. It is NOT medical prescription. If you are going to ingest herbs, consult a professional. If you are allergic, avoid them. If you are pregnant, some herbs are contraindicated (mugwort, rue, sage in large amounts). Common sense, always.

UNIVERSAL HERBS
The compendium
+
ROSEMARY
✦ Rosemary is the grandmother of magical herbs in the Río de la Plata. It grows easily, withstands drought, perfumes the air at the slightest touch. It works for almost everything: it protects the home, cleanses spaces, attracts abundance, sharpens memory, wakes you when you are asleep inside. Burn its dried leaves as cleansing smoke (light a small bundle and let it smolder), place fresh sprigs behind doors, boil it in water to wash floors. It is the most versatile herb you will ever have. Plant a bush on your balcony or in your garden — rosemary wants to be near you. Compatible with all lineages.
SAGE
◈ Sage is an ancient word. Its name comes from 'to save', and that is what it does: it saves dense spaces, clears heavy atmospheres, cuts the circulation of gossip in the home. Use it as cleansing smoke after a heated argument, after a draining visit, before healing work. White sage (the American smudge) is more ceremonial; the common sage of our region is more everyday — both work. Careful: the smoke is dense, open windows. Do not overuse around people with asthma. Do not ingest in large amounts during pregnancy.
LAVENDER
☾ Lavender is calm made plant. Its aroma lowers the pressure, softens anxiety, prepares the body for sleep. Use it in dried sachets under the pillow, in water for relaxing baths, as essential oil on the wrists. It also cleanses: a cold lavender infusion is good for wiping down the house after hard days. If your Guardian is of the Fairy or Master lineage, always keep lavender close. Compatible with almost all essential oils — it pairs especially well with chamomile and rose.
PALO SANTO
✦ Palo santo is a gift from the Ecuadorian-Peruvian forest. When burned, its wood releases a sweet-citrus-woody aroma that cleanses without harshness. Light the tip of a stick, blow out the flame, let it smolder. Carry it through the rooms of your home, especially the corners where stagnant energy gathers. It is gentler than sage, ideal for daily use. Important: buy it from ethical sources (naturally fallen wood, not logging). One stick lasts a long time — lighting the tip for a few seconds is enough. Compatible with all lineages, especially Pixies and Fairies.
RUE
◈ Rue is the fierce guardian of the criollo garden. It is not gentle: it is direct, defensive, undiplomatic. It serves for active protection against envy, the evil eye, negative witchcraft. A fresh sprig behind the front door cuts dense intentions. A little pouch of dried rue in your pocket accompanies you in hostile places. Do NOT use during pregnancy (it can cause miscarriage), do NOT apply directly to skin (it can cause photosensitivity and sunburn). Careful with high doses in infusions. But when respected, it is the best household guardian. Indispensable for Witches.
MUGWORT
☾ Mugwort is the herb of the moon and of dreams. Also called 'St. John's herb', it is used to induce lucid dreams, contact dream guides, cross the veil between worlds. A small pillow of dried mugwort under your sleeping pillow produces very vivid dreams — it can be intense, start with a small amount. Burned as cleansing smoke before meditating, it opens inner vision. Do NOT use during pregnancy. Ideal for Elves, Witches and Masters who work with subtle planes.
JASMINE
✦ Jasmine is a night flower, the perfume of a Uruguayan patio in January. Its white petals open at dusk and die at dawn — a symbol of magic that only blooms in the dark. Use fresh jasmine in water for sensual baths, in oil to perfume the bedroom, in a mild infusion to open the heart after grief. It is an herb of Fairies and Pixies. It has a subtle aphrodisiac quality. If you have a jasmine vine at home, offer it water on Fridays — the plant of love is grateful.
CHAMOMILE
◈ Chamomile is the herb of children and of tired hearts. It calms, embraces, lulls. As an infusion, it lowers anxiety and prepares you for sleep. In warm compresses over the eyes, it rests them. As cleansing smoke, it softens tense atmospheres (it blends well with lavender). Plant chamomile in your garden — it attracts bees and blessings. It is the best friend of a nervous stomach. Compatible with all lineages, especially Gnomes and Fairies.
MINT
☾ Mint is a green spark, a natural alarm clock. Its aroma sharpens the mind, helps digestion, refreshes the air. As an infusion, it wakes you without the jitters of coffee. As cleansing smoke (dried leaves), it clears heavy mental atmospheres. In fresh water with lemon, ideal for summer and for busy households. Plant it in a separate pot because it is invasive. Compatible with Pixies, Gnomes, and as a companion to any ritual of mental clarity.
COPAL
✦ Copal is the sacred resin of Mexico, sister to myrrh and frankincense. It is burned over a charcoal disc and releases a dense, sweet white smoke that feels ancient. Use it for deep ceremonies, for cleansing very dense spaces, for opening important work. It is stronger than palo santo. Do NOT use in small rooms without ventilation. Ideal for altars, for monthly ceremonies, for the start of a cycle. Compatible with Witches, Masters and Elves.
MYRRH
◈ Myrrh is a bitter, dark, deep resin. It is ceremony, it is shadow work, it is a descent into the unconscious. Its smoke is dense, earthy, ancient — the pharaohs used it in embalming. It is not for everyday use: it is for serious ritual work, for long processes, for accompanying deep grief or intense therapeutic work. It is burned over a charcoal disc. It blends well with frankincense (a classic combination in ancient incense). For Masters and Witches in moments of deep work.
FRANKINCENSE
☾ Frankincense (also called church incense or olibanum) is the golden resin that has perfumed temples for millennia. Its smoke elevates, connects with the sacred, prepares you for prayer or deep meditation. It is burned over a charcoal disc. It is more luminous and elevated than myrrh. Ideal for altars, for hours of silence, for beginning the day with intention. It combines with myrrh (the ceremonial classic) and with sandalwood. For Masters, Elves and any moment of spiritual seeking.
BAY LAUREL
✦ Bay laurel is the leaf of victory, an ancient symbol of protection and abundance. A dried leaf in your wallet attracts prosperity. Three leaves under the kitchen counter protect the food. A leaf written with a wish and burned on the full moon sends the intention to the sky. Use fresh bay leaf in cooking (it is edible and delicious). Plant a bay tree near the entrance of your home. Compatible with Gnomes, Talismans and Masters.
CEDAR
◈ Cedar is a sacred tree of the original peoples of the Americas. Its wood, burned in slivers, releases clean, deep, blessed smoke. Use it to cleanse new homes, to smoke-cleanse spaces before moving in, to inaugurate important work. It is stronger than palo santo, gentler than copal. Good for Elves, Masters and any ritual of closing or opening an important cycle.
ROSE (PETALS)
☾ Rose petals are the herb of love in all its forms. Red for passionate love, white for pure love, pink for tender love, yellow for friendship. Use dried petals in ritual baths (especially on Fridays), in little pillows for the heart, in a mild infusion to open the heart after romantic grief. Harvest roses from your own garden if you have one (energetically they are more potent than store-bought). Ideal for Fairies and Talismans of the heart.
WAYS TO USE
How to use the herbs
+
SMOKE CLEANSING
✦ Smoke cleansing is the quickest way to work with herbs. You burn the dried herb and the smoke does the work. It serves to cleanse spaces, people, objects. It is a universal language: in every ancestral culture, smoke is the vehicle that carries intention toward the invisible.
When: After arguments, before meditating, when you move house, after draining visits, at the start of the week, on the new moon and full moon, when the air feels dense for no apparent reason.
How: Light the herb (a dried bundle, a palo santo stick, resin over a charcoal disc) until it catches. Blow out the flame so only the ember remains. Carry the smoke through the space or around the person, opening windows so the smoke leaves together with what it cleanses. Accompany it with spoken intention.
INFUSION
◈ An infusion is the herb taken as tea. The body absorbs the plant's active and emotional principles. It is the most intimate way to work with herbs: the plant literally enters your blood.
When: To calm anxiety (chamomile, lavender, lemon balm), to wake up (mint, rosemary), for dreams (mugwort, valerian), to open the heart (rose, jasmine). Drink the infusion as a ritual, not as hurried hydration.
How: One teaspoon of dried herb per cup. Water just short of boiling. Cover the cup for 5-7 minutes. Strain. Drink slowly, taking in the aroma. Ask the herb to do its work in your body.
WATERS
☾ Waters are herbs in cold or lukewarm water, not ingested but used externally. Floral waters, moon waters, waters for ritual baths. It is the oldest form of sacred cosmetics.
When: For energetic cleansing baths (when closing a cycle, when starting a project, after a dense event), for wiping down the house, for watering plants with intention.
How: Boil herbs in water, let cool, strain. Use that water for a bath (pour it over yourself after your normal shower, from the shoulders down), or to clean floors, or to refresh your altar.
AMULETS / BUNDLES
✦ Amulets are herbs wrapped in cloth or tied in little bundles, hung up or carried with you. They are portable intention, they are permanent protection.
When: To carry in your bag or purse (mini-amulet), to hang behind doors (bundles), to gift to loved ones (personalized amulet).
How: Choose a handful of herbs according to your intention. Wrap them in natural cotton cloth (white, red or violet depending on the purpose). Tie with natural thread. Charge the amulet with three breaths and spoken intention. Renew every 3-6 months.
HERBAL MIST
◈ The herbal mist is a spray of hydrosols or floral waters. It is the alternative when you cannot use smoke (asthma, babies, pets, offices).
When: In spaces where nothing can be burned, to refresh atmospheres during the day, for a quick cleanse before visitors, for your body after a dense day.
How: Buy a hydrosol (lavender, rose, rosemary) or prepare an herbal water and put it in a spray bottle. Mist the space with intention. Also over your auric field (head, shoulders, back).
THE SMOKE CLEANSING RITUAL
How to do it well
+
- 1Prepare yourself first ✦ Wash your hands. Tie your hair back if it is long. Remove dangling jewelry. Wear comfortable clothes you don't mind absorbing the aroma. Take three deep breaths. Define mentally what you are going to do: cleanse the house? cleanse your field? bless a new project? Let the intention be clear before lighting anything.
- 2Ventilate the space ◈ Open ALL the windows and at least one door. The smoke needs a way out. If dense energies have nowhere to go, they stay floating. The rule is simple: the smoke comes in fresh, leaves loaded. If it is raining, open what you can, even just a little.
- 3Choose the herb according to your intention ☾ Sage for deep cleansing, palo santo for gentle daily cleansing, rosemary for protection, copal for big ceremony, lavender to calm after an argument. Don't mix many herbs the first time — start simple. One herb at a time until you learn to feel how each one works.
- 4Light it with respect ✦ Use a wooden match or a candle, avoid chemical lighters. Light the tip of the bundle or stick, wait until it catches well, then blow out the flame so only the ember remains. The smoke appears as soon as the fire goes out. Always keep a heat-resistant vessel nearby (a clay bowl, a seashell, a deep plate).
- 5Begin at the front door ◈ The front door is the throat of the house. Start there, drawing a circle with the smoke, and say something like: 'I cleanse this entrance of everything that is not welcome here.' Then walk clockwise through the whole house, carrying smoke through every room.
- 6Pay special attention to the corners ☾ The corners are where stagnant energy gathers. Pause a few seconds in each corner of each room, letting the smoke reach the ceiling and the floor. Also attend to: behind doors, under beds, inside open wardrobes, in the bathrooms.
- 7Cleanse important objects with smoke ✦ Pass smoke over your altar, over your Guardians (without touching them, only the smoke around them), over your bed, your desk, your phone, your computer. What you use most deserves frequent cleansing.
- 8Finish with yourself ◈ Pass the smoke over yourself: from feet to head, first along the front, then the back (someone can help you). Especially over the head, the shoulders, the solar plexus, the hands. Close your eyes as you do it, and feel how what is not yours leaves.
- 9Extinguish completely ☾ Bury the remaining ember in fine sand, coarse salt or water. NEVER leave a lit ember unattended. Palo santo goes out by resting it in the bowl until it cools. Make sure no spark remains before leaving the room.
- 10Close with gratitude ✦ Say thank you out loud. To the herb, to your Guardian, to your home. Leave the windows open at least 15 more minutes. Drink some water. Sit for a few minutes and feel the difference. The house breathes differently now. So do you.

SEASONAL CALENDAR
Which herbs for each season
+
SUMMER
✦ Summer (December-March in Uruguay): the time of fresh, aromatic, refreshing herbs. MINT: for cool waters and mental cleansing. JASMINE: blooms in January, gather petals at dusk. ROSEMARY: take advantage of its strong growth and harvest sprigs to dry. LAVENDER: blooms in December-January. Smoke-cleanse sparingly (heat plus smoke gets dense), use more waters and cool baths. Harvest and dry for winter.
AUTUMN
◈ Autumn (March-June): time of deep harvest and of beginning to smoke-cleanse more. SAGE: the best season to cut and dry garden sage. MUGWORT: ripens now, gather it for dream pillows and rituals. BAY LAUREL: leaves are most concentrated in autumn. RUE: a protective cutting before winter. This is the season to cleanse the house deeply and prepare the space for the cold months.
WINTER
☾ Winter (June-September): time of warm herbs, infusions, long smoke cleansings. CHAMOMILE: for the long, cold nights. MYRRH and FRANKINCENSE: deep ceremony indoors. CEDAR: winter cleansing (the house closes up, energies concentrate). GINGER in infusion with honey. This is the season to meditate more, to work with dreams (mugwort), to care for body and spirit alike.
SPRING
✦ Spring (September-December): time of blossoming and movement. ROSE: they begin to bloom, gather petals at dawn. JASMINE: new shoots, prepare the jasmine vine. MINT: regrows strongly, prune it so it grows fuller. GENERAL CLEANSING: the best season for a big house cleansing with rosemary, sage, palo santo. The energy of beginnings, of planting new intentions.
COMMON PROBLEMS
If this happens to you
+
I AM ALLERGIC TO SMOKE — WHAT DO I DO?
✦ Use the herbal mist (hydrosol sprays), waters for baths and cleaning, amulets of dried herbs in cloth. You can also use essential oils with a water diffuser (not a heat one). Magic does not strictly need smoke.
MY PET CAME NEAR THE CLEANSING SMOKE — IS IT DANGEROUS?
◈ Some smokes can irritate cats and birds especially. When you smoke-cleanse, keep pets in another well-ventilated room. Air everything out before they come back. Palo santo and lavender are the safest; sage and rue are the strongest.
I BOUGHT HERBS AND THEY SMELL OF NOTHING
☾ They are probably old or poorly stored. Dried herbs lose potency over time (6 months to 1 year at most). Resins last longer (2-3 years). Buy from trusted places, store in dark glass jars, away from the sun.
I SMOKE-CLEANSED AND NOW I HAVE A HEADACHE
✦ Three possible reasons: 1) Too much smoke in a small space — ventilate more. 2) The herb was too strong for you (try a gentler one). 3) You are releasing — the headache can be part of the process. Drink water, rest. If it persists for more than a few hours, see a doctor.
I WANT FRESH HERBS BUT HAVE NO GARDEN
◈ A pot on the balcony. Rosemary, lavender, mint, chamomile and sage grow perfectly in pots. If you have no balcony, a sunny window (rosemary and mint tolerate low light). Buy at organic markets for freshness.
CAN I MIX HERBS IN ONE SMOKE CLEANSING?
☾ Yes, but with judgment. Good combinations: rosemary + sage, lavender + chamomile, copal + myrrh, frankincense + sandalwood. Avoid mixing more than three herbs at a time — the energetic information becomes confused.
MY PARTNER DOESN'T BELIEVE IN THIS — DOES IT AFFECT ANYTHING?
✦ Not necessarily. Herbs work in their own way. But do the smoke cleansing when you are alone, or ask them to respect the ritual even if they don't believe. Active mockery contaminates the intention. Respectful indifference does not.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What the Tribe asks
+
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I SMOKE-CLEANSE THE HOUSE?
✦ A monthly cleansing is essential (on the new moon or full moon). A weekly cleansing is recommended (Monday morning). An extra cleansing after arguments, draining visits, dense days. If your home has a lot of movement (a big family, an office, therapy work), do it more often.
DO HERBS HAVE CONTRAINDICATIONS?
◈ Yes. During pregnancy avoid: rue, mugwort, sage in large amounts, rosemary ingested in excess. If breastfeeding, consult first. Small children: use smoke with LOTS of ventilation. People with asthma: prefer waters and oils over smoke.
ARE DRIED HERBS AS GOOD AS FRESH ONES?
☾ For smoke cleansing, yes (and they are more practical). For infusions too. For baths, fresh ones are more potent. For amulets, dried ones last longer. Each form has its use.
CAN I GROW MY OWN HERBS?
✦ Yes, and it is the ideal. Herbs you tend carry your energy and are more potent in your rituals. Rosemary, lavender, mint, chamomile, sage, rue and bay laurel grow well in Uruguay.
DO SUPERMARKET HERBS WORK?
◈ For basic infusions, yes. For rituals, better to buy at herbalist shops or organic markets — they are fresher and carry fewer pesticides. For smoke cleansing, use herbs sold specifically for that purpose.
WHAT DO I DO WITH THE ASHES FROM THE SMOKE CLEANSING?
☾ Return them to the earth (garden, flowerpot) with gratitude. NOT down the toilet. NOT in the regular trash. The ashes are sacred because they are the herb transformed — returning them to the earth closes the cycle.
CAN I USE STORE-BOUGHT INCENSE?
✦ Yes, but read the ingredients. Much commercial incense contains synthetic chemicals that do not work the same way. Look for natural, handmade incense with pure botanical ingredients. More expensive, but worth it.
IS SMOKE-CLEANSING MY BODY SAFE?
◈ Yes, as long as you keep the ember away from the body. Pass the smoke around yourself, let it envelop you. Do not inhale it directly. Do not rest a hot ember on the skin. Tie back long hair so it does not burn.
CAN I GIVE INFUSIONS TO MY CHILDREN?
☾ Chamomile and lemon balm are safe from an early age (in low doses). For other herbs, consult a pediatrician. Do NOT give mugwort, rue or concentrated sage to small children.
DO HERBS WORK IF I DON'T BELIEVE?
✦ They have proven chemical effects (lavender relaxes, mint awakens, chamomile calms). Energetically, intention amplifies the effect. Without clear intention, the effect is just aromatherapy. With clear intention, it is magic.
Your Guardian was created by hand with intention
You do not need intermediaries to hear him. What you felt when you received him is the beginning — the rest opens as you look at him, speak to him, let him exist. This portal exists so you have the tools at hand. The bond is something you make.
"✦ Herbs are the bridge between your home and the forest. Learning them is learning an ancient language your Guardian already speaks. Plant them, dry them, burn them, drink them — but above all, listen to them. ☾"
