Aniceto brews the first mate when the forest is still dark, with water he heats on a hollow stone beside the embers. His old gaucho hat knows more dawns than any rooster. They say his yerba is never rinsed, and that it isn't strong-magic: it's that he knows how to wait. He shows up wherever someone has something stuck inside — an untold sorrow, news that weighs heavy — and he asks nothing. He sits close, straightens his green kerchief, and passes the mate. The silence between rounds does the work. When the person finally speaks, he listens with those big eyes of someone who has watched many winters go by. There are things that only loosen sip by sip, with someone who doesn't rush you.
